For some, having Brad Pitt tell you he's a fan would be enough to make you notarize your will and cash in your 401K. But for local comedian Scotty Lee, that's just part of the job.
"When you do what we do, you aren't really phased by celebrities because you know them personally and realize they are just people, too," explains Lee in an e-mail interview. "But I did have a fan moment when I did a show in L.A. and after my set, Brad Pitt came up to me and shook my hand and told me he thought I was funny. I was so stunned to meet him that all I could say was, ''Fight Club' f--king rocked man!' It was a star-struck moment but that was years ago, so I should hope that at this point I could compose myself much better in that situation."
But Pitt's not his only fan. Lee's local fanbase has grown to include anyone from the crowd of tattooed rascals who ambushed him for autographs to the occasional groupie (come on ladies, the man's engaged!). Lee says it's also not uncommon to get recognized "when I'm buying toilet paper and a case of Red Bull at Wal-Mart at 3 a.m. wearing PJs and pink slippers."
Yeah, maybe he's a celeb (who wears pink slippers to Wal-Mart?), but his comedy caters to the Everyperson with jokes about everyday life.
"I do jokes about how everyone darts for the handicap stall when they go to the bathroom for the space, or how we've all been walking up the stairs in the middle of the night and thought there was one more stair there for some reason and turf it," he says. "The simple things in life that we all see and ignore, that's what I like to talk about."
Lee, who also calls himself an actor and singer-songwriter ("with a style that's a mixture of Jack Johnson and Chad Kroeger with a hint of Dierks Bentley"), keeps himself marketable. His friendly set of comedy makes him Wiseguys-worthy, while his raunchy tendencies could peg him with the Uncensored Comedy Movement.
"It's funny how a comic from Utah is lumped into one of two categories: a Wiseguys comic or an Uncensored comic," Lee says. "I have to say that I am neither. I guess you could say I'm an independent contractor of sorts who is capable of performing clean or uncensored shows."
Fresh off the "Am I Wrong" comedy tour, Lee's already set to take his show on the road again. Scotty Lee's "University Comedy Tour Through Utah" (his first headlining tour) will start hitting campuses on March 31, aiming to make students across the Beehive State spew coffee out their noses in laughter.
In the meantime, you can catch Lee at several club gigs coming up on Feb. 13, 21 and 28. And as added incentive to attend the shows, Lee will be giving away his comedy DVD, "Am I Wrong," depending on availability. Because you know he wants to get rid of 'em since he's about to start filming a new one.
So, besides a headlining tour and an upcoming DVD, what's next for this oh-so-hot-right-now comedian?
"We are crossing our fingers for a Comedy Central or HBO special -- hell, I'll take a poorly plotted reality show at this point," Lee says. "Any chicas out there looking to pretend they love me for ratings, I'm down. Let's do this."
