The Cove
Director: Louie Psihoyos
Starring: Richard O'Barry
Rated: PG-13 for disturbing content.
"The Cove" is difficult to explain. On the simplest of levels, it is a film about a group of people who are trying to document the needless slaughter of dolphins in the Japanese city of Taiji. But it is so much more than a traditional documentary. It is an espionage thriller, a call to action and buried beneath the horrors, it is also a film about Richard O'Barry's search for redemption.
"The Cove" is a jaw-dropping experience. Not only does it have an incredible and terrifying story to tell but it also presents its message in such a way that it rivals a multi-million dollar Hollywood production in its use of high-tech equipment.
You will be disturbed and infuriated, not just because the film documents the dirty secrets of Taiji, but also because even someone who adamantly opposes animal rights can't deny the pointless nature and harm that results from the mass slaughter of dolphins for food. It isn't a debatable subject. This must be stopped.
