Club Review: Glamour ups club Karamba's appeal
Posted 2009-07-17 12:00:59 by Amanda Chamberlain
There ain't much going on in Sugar House in terms of nightlife, but Karamba (1051 E. 2100 S.) aims to change that with its new Wednesday ladies' night, Glamour. A popular spot on the weekend for the latino/a crowd, the mid-week night is trying to change the pigeonhole by offering big-name DJs, an all-ethnicities clientelle and dance-dance atmosphere.

I was slated to judge the "hard body" contest Glamour was touting as part of its grand opening on Wed., Jul. 15, but the crowd was having too much fun dancing to the top-40/hip-hop and video mashups spun by Utah/L.A. go-betweener Boy Loco and headliner DJ Thrive. Thrive, a genuinely nice dude, is apparently tight with DJ FelliFel, as the popular remixer gave him a shout out on his new mix CD "Thrive Time" (every Glamour attendee took one home for free).

The club itself utilizes its boutique-sized space exellently. Nailing the "danceclub vibe" with low, red lighting; swanky, IKEA-outfitted VIP lounges; and two cosmopolitan bars, it conjures an international-style hangout that's highly conducive to getting drunk and dancing till you drop. So much so, in fact, that the crowd and atmosphere remind me of a small-scale Flirt Wednesdays that go on at Bliss Nightlife.

Though beers are full-priced at $4 a pop, the club throws out $2 tequila shots and appletinis on Glamour Wednesdays that make a night out easy on the wallet (especially when combined with no cover). Next week, "Real World" contestant Chet Cannon aka "The Ladies Man" will host so grab your girlfriends and a couple of bucks and head to Glamour for a night of shimmies and shots.

Photos by me: Clubgoer Javier entertains the crowd with a glow-show; the bartenders work quickly to keep up with the demand; a clubgoer taking flight on the dancefloor; DJ Boy Loco warming up the crowd with top-40 mixes; the early dancefloor made blurry by fog machines; a group enjoying a posh VIP area; next week's flier.
