Utah Arts Festival Artist Profile: No Blood to Spare
Posted 2009-06-26 11:37:14 by Ryan Michael Painter

No Blood to Spare

When: Sat., June 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: City and County Building stairs

On a typical night you'd find the members of No Blood to Spare playing an bizarre mix of unclassifiable music with influences that range from industrial to jazz and rockabilly to belly dance, but for the Utah Arts Festival band member Ra explains that they'll "stick with a traditional bell dance set."

"Two of us, [me] and Tony, were musicians for the Kismet School of Dance and played at the Utah Arts Festival for several years in a row. Joel often played with Kismet as well so it seemed natural to keep making that mind of music when Kismet disbanded," Ra says.

Having worked with many different belly dance troupes over the years I ask what we should expect from this year's performance.

"We work with a lot of local troupes. Our Utah Arts Festival shows have dozens of dancers. This year we're featuring a stunning mix of dancers that includes Sekmet and Amani, Nepenthe and Dragomi, Las Gitanas, Ostara and Shiva's Fire," he says.

Looking towards the future Ra tells me that the band are preparing to release two albums. One is traditional belly dance music and the other will feature a more industrial sound.
