Branded and On Display: A new art exhibit comments on advertising.
Posted 2009-02-18 15:40:42 by Kelly Ashkettle
A Neolithic culture pot lovingly detailed with a Coca-Cola logo? Check. A richly detailed portrait of a man's head with a Nike logo shaved into it? Check. An allegorical oil painting based on "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter"? Yep. The Salt Lake Art Center's new exhibit, "Branded and On Display," aims to cast a different light on the marketing images that surround us.
From cradle to coffin, our modern lives are framed by purchases. Logos, brand names and billboards surround us on all sides, pleading with us to buy, buy, buy. What better way to comment on this visual assault than by using visuals? "Branded and On Display" examines the work of 22 artists who respond to marketing images with both humor and criticism, encouraging us to think about how advertising shapes our thinking.
The opening reception is Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. during the Gallery Stroll, and the exhibit will run through May 23. The Salt Lake Art Center is located at 20 S. West Temple, and admission is free. More info: www.slartcenter.org
