Reality TV: America?s Next Top Model vs. Make Me a Supermodel
Posted 2009-05-07 11:05:06 by Amy Spencer
Wednesday night is the best night for reality TV if you love fashion, photoshoots and modeling like I do.
It starts at 7 p.m. with “America’s Next Top Model.” The winner of cycle 12 will be named next Wednesday and I feel a sense of relief to see this trainwreck end. It’s refreshing to change the channel at 8 p.m. to watch “Make Me a Super Model” hosted by the very sexy Tyson Beckford and Australian supermodel Nicole Trunfio.
The two shows could be compared to Seventeen and Vogue. “ANTM” was great in the beginning, but I do feel I have outgrown it, yet I can’t look away when it’s in front of me.
With “ANTM,” Tyra Banks and her entourage make ridiculous jokes that make the young girls squeal everytime she does something silly. The loud music is the producers way of making it appeal to the younger audience who shop at stores that blast music as loud as a nightclub.
With "MMS," not only do you have female and male models competing against each other, but you have an professional panel of judges that don’t sugarcoat and bond with the contestants the way “ANTM” does. Plus, you don’t get that blasting music — it’s quiet and classy. Plus, the drama is rarely played up.
So what brought on this comparison was what happened last night on “ANTM.” Celia, the 25-year-old fashionista from Kentucky was sent home. Her face may not say model, but the rest of her exudes a very modelesque character. But what the judges said about sending her home was that she was too old. I think someone even referred to her as a mom. Ouch!
I soothed the pain of “ANTM” with “MMS” where I realized these models are insanely better than those on the CW show, however some of these models are older. Jonathan, the British model who was told “when I see you, I see money,” is 26 and has a wife and child. Mountaha is 23 and appears older and there was one contestant on the show, Shawn, who was 30!
Celia was amazing, and I think it was a poor decision on the casting people to allow her in the competition if they were going ot make an issue about her age. I think she would have had a better chance on “MMS.”
