You've probably heard of Band of Annuals -- and for good reason. This ambitious sextet has gained a steady following both local and abroad, performing their wistful folk-country nearly every weekend. Jeremi Hanson's sweet-voiced back-up boosts the appeal of Jay Henderson's mournful range; both of which are backed by a foot-shuffle of rhythm and steady, twangy guitar. To give you a bit of perspective, this is what www.nowontour.com says about Band of Annuals: "I've got these records right alongside my collection of Johnny Cash and Drive-By Truckers..."
Now see what the band has to say -- or at least their bassist Trever, who filled out (some) of our e-mail interview.
Please describe your music to our readers. (unanswered)
What's the band currently working on? Demos for the new album, aligning our next tour and what to do with our next album.
If Band of Annuals could add any other musician to its ranks, who would it be and why? A mechanic.
What are Band of Annuals' biggest accomplishments? Not killing each other. Staying friends.
If Band of Annuals were a city, which one would it be and why? Salt Lake City.
Band of Annuals has climbed the ranks in local-scene popularity. Can you pinpoint the moment when you were like, "Hey, we're doing pretty well!"? (unanswered)
Why do you think fans like your music? Everybody has different reasons, I'm not always sure. I like it because my grandma does.
You released an album on Kilby Records. What has your experience been like with the label? We're especially curious because we're seemingly in an era of self-releasing. Will and Lance have saved us a couple of times. They have been very helpful doing things for us that we could have not done without them.
Best tour story: Our van broke down in a little town five hours from Athens, Ga., where the show was that night. We didn't want to cancel, so we rented two pick-up trucks and drove five hours. It started raining like crazy, so we pulled off and finally found tarps to buy. We covered the gear and sped on. We pulled up to the 40 Watt with just enough time to load onstage and play. After the show, three of us drove back and waited all day in this little dead town for the van to be fixed.
Favorite places to shop, eat and drink: Slowtrain, Nobrow, Alchemy, Eva's, Mazza, Channon Thai, Decades, Salt Lake Roasting Co., Randy's Records, State wine store, Signed and Numbered.
What does the band plan to accomplish in the near future? We have some shows this summer, but our main focus is recording our next album then following it up with a tour.
What else would you like our readers to know? Supporting local music is important; even if you don't like our band, look for other local shows and support them.
