Film Review: '9500 Liberty'
Posted 2010-07-21 11:12:04 by Ryan Michael Painter
The documentary "9500 Liberty" looks at Prince William County, Va., and the impact of its 2007 Immigration Resolution that required police to question anyone that they have "probable cause" to suspect is an illegal alien.
Initially the film plays out the way you'd expect, as it features two opinionated and vastly opposing views clashing in public forums. The filmmakers are clearly against the Immigration Resolution, and while it could be suggested that they were able to pick and choose the most shocking and ignorant statements made by the resolution's supporters, the pure abundance of jaw-dropping statements from a variety of sources speak for themselves.
After the passage of the resolution, the film captures the impact on the community. Yes, the supporters of the resolution have won, but the gifts and rewards they expected to receive come in less than satisfactory wrappings. It would seem that chasing away a portion of the local economy, even if it is less than 10 percent, can have a dramatic and far-reaching effect on the economy as a whole.
"9500 Liberty" is yet another warning from history that reminds us that if we repeat the follies of our past, we will only continue to undermine our future.
