Thanksgiving is a brilliant holiday. When the main objective is eating, hanging with family and friends, and more eating, it's hard to find a better day to celebrate. But what used to be a relaxing, no-stress holiday now causes a bit of anxiety for me since my mom handed down the turkey duty to me a few years ago.

Without hesitation, I'm confident in dressing anyone with no problem -- but when it comes to dressing a turkey -- that doesn't come naturally at all. Krista in the kitchen isn't always a good thing. Thankfully, mom's a great teacher (she taught me my mad sewing skills) and I've managed to come through with suitable Thanksgiving dinners.

Thanksgiving is also the time to reflect, appreciate and give thanks, and in my world that includes fashion. Maybe in comparison to everything else going on, fashion and the latest trends don't seem that significant, but I believe fashion is still important. What we wear and how we present ourselves is something that we have total control over. Fashion is a means of self expression, allowing us to say something about ourselves, who we are or who we'd like to be.

It's a time to be thankful for what we have in our closets. This Thanksgiving I am thankful for:

Patterned tights » I just can't get enough of the great tights that are available: paisley, houndstooth, lace patterns, bold colors, and my favorite pair -- DKNY's grey and red plaid. It is such an easy and inexpensive way to add personality and color to make your look pop.

Stretch denim and leggings » Comfort is essential on Thanksgiving and having the stretch factor can be helpful after the big meal. Leggings are a great substitute for sweat pants; you've still got the ease and comfort, but a better fit and no saggy crotch.

The fur trend » I'm loving all the fur coats, vests, hats, boots and even skirts this winter; now that we've got snow it's fur time. Instantly make your favorite casual wear go all warm and cozy just by adding a faux fur piece.

Fitted suits for men » Thanks to the very fashionable cast of "Mad Men," the razor sharp trim fitting suit, narrow lapel, crisp white hanky, skinny tie and slim cut pants are back. Wearing a great fitted jacket lets you get away with most anything and gives you that extra touch. Guys, you should know this, but judging by how some of you choose to wear your suits, I'm not convinced.

Designer brands at discount stores » The rumors are true -- Jean Paul Gaultier is doing a Target Collection, following in the footsteps of Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui and Rodarte as part of Target's designer collaboration series. Gaultier is the creative force behind Madonna's infamous cone-shaped bras and corsets. These obviously aren't investment pieces from the runways, but who can resist a designer look at discount prices?

Vintage and thrift shopping » Not only is it cost effective, it's the best way to discover some really cool and unique stuff. Find those classics that have never gone out of style, or look for distinctive, quirky pieces to set you apart from everyone else. Vintage fashion is accessible and affordable for everyone.

Fashion shows » I've attended over 25 fashion shows and events since I became IN's fashion columnist last April. It's fun and exciting to see Salt Lake developing its own vibrant fashion scene. Of course, it wouldn't be possible without the help and talent of local boutiques and retailers, designers, photographers, artists, models, media and PR people who have contributed much to promote an energetic emerging fashion environment.

You » I'm thankful for IN readers and staff, friends, family (especially you, Stan) and fashion fans. Many thanks for your comments, suggestions and for reading and supporting "The Fashion File."

My interns and assistants » David, Sara, Cheyenne and Tiffany, your help, encouragement and dedication are priceless.

And last but not least, I'm thankful for all my shoes, and I'd certainly be grateful if I had a few more! Happy Thanksgiving.
