New on Blu-ray: 'The Prisoner'
Posted 2009-11-03 10:57:22 by Ryan Michael Painter
Blu-ray » "Danger Man" star Patrick McGoohan's attempt to break away from the confines of the spy genre, which he was at least partially to blame for its popularity in the '60s, came in the form of the ill-fated "The Prisoner." The series lasted for only 17 episodes and some have suggested that American audiences were still too hopeful to embrace the show's Orwellian take on a government entity that promotes the concept that ignorance is bliss. The plot revolves around a man who awakens in a confined village where he is surrounded by a gleeful mass of people who accept that they are confined in a prison with no possible escape, for reasons that have not been revealed. Unable to assimilate, this man searches for answers but finds more questions. What surely looked like a heavy dose of paranoia then certainly looks entirely feasible (if not probable) now.
Audio and video are better than expected from a 40-year-old TV show. Even better is the exhaustive collection of extras (which includes the original cut of "The Arrival" and a feature-length retrospective).
