Blu-ray Review: Stop Making Sense, Talking Heads

Stop Making Sense Talking Heads

For Fans Of » R.E.M., David Byrne

What does one say about one of the most lauded concert films of all time that hasn't already been said? How about this: I wasn't a fan of the Talking Heads even when they were R.E.M. before R.E.M. became pop darlings in the early '90s. I just didn't get the Talking Heads, but I always felt like I should. I hadn't seen "Stop Making Sense" until it was released on DVD. After years of hearing about how wonderful the film was, I figured I could at least sit down and see what the fuss was all about. The film didn't have the monumental impact that U2's "Rattle and Hum" did, but it was enough to convince this indifferent critic that there really was something to the band's success. Revisiting the film for its Blu-ray release proved to be just as amicable, only this time I knew all the words.

"Stop Making Sense" doesn't feature the same crispness and depth of newer concert films but it looks surprisingly good for being 25 years old. The audio? Phenomenal. Give it a look, even if you're a skeptic.
