Cover Story: Anatomy of a Hipster

With hipster culture becoming commonplace, you need to know how to look the part. Here's the guide for making it look like you belong at a Le Tigre show.

Opt for large glasses in a '50s horn-rimmed, '70s aviator or '80s Ray Ban styles. Lenses optional, neon coloring a plus.

Choose hair that's on either extremes of the spectrum: Uncut, unruly and unwashed; or manicured into an abstract shape. Bonus retro points if you shave in shapes or steps, sport a fro or flattop, or wear a flapper headband with bangs. A straw fedora, felt bowler or slouch beanie nullifies your need for all the above.

Grow as much facial hair as possible and shape it into some form of moustache, beard or anything else you can think of. Bonus retro-appreciation points if you can curl your 'stache up at the corners.

Carry a leather satchel to transport your Mac laptop, or a band button-covered hobo bag to hold your red lipstick and Hipster Handbook. Bonus retro-appreciation points if you opt for a fanny pack.

You don't even have to drink it, but carry a tall boy of PBR. Bonus culture-appreciation points for choosing Tecate.

Wear a boyfriend tanktop with a grandpa cardigan. Bonus anti-establishment points for girls who go braless.

Wear a way-too-tight T-shirt with way-too-tight skinny jeans. Bonus anti-establishment points if your shirt says the word "Fuck" followed by a pop culture reference.

Pile on the earth-toned jewelry. Bonus nature-appreciation points for feathers, turquoise and leather.

Get inked with something that you can whip out at a party for instant laughs, like a unicorn nailing My Little Pony. Bonus anti-establishment points for covering as much of your body with these as you can.

Shod your hooves with low-slung leather boots, Vans slip-ons, or heeled booties with some sort of retro button or bow closure. Bonus retro-appreciation points for sporting grandpa loafers.
