Outdoors: Adrenaline flows at Causey.
Posted 2009-08-31 15:17:29 by Erin AlbertyFor In This Week

You Should Go Causey Reservoir

Location » Causey Reservoir is off State Road 39 about 12 miles east of Huntsville, in Weber County. Turn right onto Causey Road just past milepost 27, east of the Willows campground. Bear right at the fork 1.8 miles in, and you'll see the dam. Continue south to the parking lot. Some people park at the dam and walk to the west shore.

Getting around » Kayak or canoe is the easiest. I also saw innertubes, rafts and swimmers. A life vest is required. The boat ramp is barricaded, so don't bring any craft you can't carry from the parking lot.

Jumping » Keep your arms down and your legs together. I wore my life vest, as drownings are common in mountain reservoirs. Don't assume you won't get hurt; start very small.

Other activities » Hiking, fishing, swimming, paddling. One canoeist packed camping gear for a paddle-in overnighter. I saw no established sites from the shore, but makeshift sites are rumored to exist above the eastern reaches of the lake.

Camping » Forbidden in the parking area. Sites are available at several Forest Service campgrounds on S.R. 39 within 5 miles of the reservoir. Information, (801) 625-5112. Camping also available at Weber County Memorial Park. Details at http://www.co.weber.ut.us/parks/wmpark.php.

Summer is almost over, but there's still time to visit the Crazy-Stupid Line at Causey Reservoir.

I don't make it out to the Crazy-Stupid Line often enough. During ski season, I might see it once or twice in a chute where I have no earthly business. There was that kayaking trip through the lightning storm a few weeks ago. And a Ten High binge at the summit of Pfeifferhorn last year brought the Crazy-Stupid Line into sharp relief during the loose-rock scramble back down.

The Crazy-Stupid Line is usually something that finds me when I don't care to see it. Not often do I seek out knee-quaking fear.

But jumping off cliffs into water looked super fun.

I paddled my kayak around the rocky shores of Causey and watched braver souls fling themselves off 40- and 50-foot ledges. They plunged into the glassy water like bombs, pow! Then they'd bob to the surface and howl "WOOOHOOO" before sputtering and gasping their way back to the rocks.

I'd never jumped off anything so high.

"You actually have time to think!" a jumper yelled up to his friends. "I'm in the air, and I realize I'm doing math in my head. MATH."

OK, time to fly. No excuses.

Some dudes from Ogden were jumping from a lower ledge across the reservoir. A 19-year-old named Will directed me up the wall to a spot about 25 feet above the water.

That was plenty high. I couldn't tell which was worse -- looking down or looking out. Every time I stepped out to the edge my legs shook, lending probability to a scenario wherein I collapse to the water, land at a bad angle, break my neck and spend the rest of my days plotting a suicide I might still pull off without use of my arms or legs.

Will and his friends were full of advice and encouragement: Don't think, just jump, the adrenaline high is great, the first try is scary for everyone, we've all done it, no one got hurt, you can do it, one, two, three, GO!!!!

I went.

There was no math.

Just air. Gravity. A horizon drifting upward.

And that tsunami rush.

I hit the lake feeling everything more. The temperature, the resistance, that tiny moment when you're underwater but still not wet.

Rush.

I had to go again. And again. Until the sun hung low.

I paddled back to my car and looked forward to how dinner tastes after you remember that summer is all about walking the Crazy-Stupid Line.

And jumping off whenever you get the chance.

The "horizon drifting upward" and "underwater before you're wet" comments are absolutely poetic. Great writing.
