Although my assumption that we wouldn't need a table reservation for 5:30 on a Thursday evening was wrong, the counter at this tiny, popular restaurant offered a great view of the chefs expertly preparing our food.On an appetizer of four Caviar Pillows ($12), the little piles of caviar were fresh and slightly salty, but I was more in love with the moist, crispy potato pillows and the cream sauce that held it all together. The Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast ($25), had thick, juic...  Read More

Kerry Simon is known as ''the rock 'n' roll chef.'' He's earned the moniker in a few ways. There's the fact that he first started working in a Chicago pizza restaurant to earn money to buy an electric guitar. There's his rise to celebrity chef status and winning appearance on Iron Chef America. There's the Rolling Stone article naming him one of the top personalities of 1991. And there are the numerous restaurants that bear his name. One of these is the Simon Restaurant and Lou...  Read More

The Cardenas family launched a faster, leaner version of their famous restaurant Red Iguana under the banner of Taste of Red Iguana as part of the new City Creek Food Court. As a long-time fan of the Red Iguana's vegetable chimichangas, I was happy to jump on TRAX and travel three stops to check out the fast-food version of one of Utah's favorite Mexican restaurant. To simply walk up and order from their abbreviated, but still surprisingly varied menu and order without any sta...  Read More

Dessert of the Week: Mango Raspberry Tartlette$4.95, Gourmandise (250 S. 300 East)The astonishing thing about these one-serving tarts is that they are completely fresh. The sweet, tender pastry crust tastes like it was baked that morning, because it was. Located at the front of the Rail Events Center, The Front End Grille is a '50s diner-style restaurant where red is the dominant color and nostalgic memorabilia is ever-present with an old Sinclair gas station pump on display, near a wall-sized mural of 1950's Chevy trucks and cars. The icing on the small-town feeling cake is Lou Ann, the daytime manager who always wears a smile and can tell if you are from Utah or not based on your knowledge of food titles. It was one of those meals where we barely talked and only made noises that accompany food so incredible you can only describe its flavor this way.The Kathmandu, like many Indian restaurants, serves a lunch buffet. In any bookstore, you'll find a huge selection of books devoted to food. As residents of an industrialized nation, we have witnessed people making the connection between the food on their table and where it came from. In recent years, popularity has surrounded book titles like The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollen or weight-loss advising titles like Eat This, Not That! Not to mention movies like ''Food Inc.'' and the locally-produced ''Killer at Large.''These books contain top...  Read More

Following our planning of the ''SLC Vegan'' issue, the IN staff decided to indulge in a vegan lunch at Evergreen House Café. I'll say it again: You can judge a restaurant by the way they treat their vegetarians. It can be very challenging to visit a famous-for-their-burgers restaurant and find options beyond a salad (hold the turkey and the bacon dressing) or sides. French fries don't qualify as a satisfying meal. Although Acme Burger does have ''burger'' in the name, they are one of the most accommodating joints that have great food for vegetarians too. It takes a fair amount of confidence to include the phrase ''mighty fine'' in the name of your restaurant. Then again, Rich could have used the word ''gourmet.''
