HandMade Films was formed by Beatle guitarist George Harrison and Denis O'Brian in 1978 when the financing for Monty Python's ''Life of Brian'' fell through. Throughout the '80s HandMade Films would release a number of highly regarded films and at least one dubious failure in the Sean Penn and Madonna vehicle ''Shanghai Surprise.'' Sony Pictures released ''Life of Brian'' on Blu-ray in early in 2008 but it was the only film from HandMade Film's heyday to get the high-def treatment ...  Read More

Just as students are returning to populate classrooms the History Channel is releasing the first wave in their new ''Instant Expert'' line of informative DVDS. Each DVD is a self-contained history lesson that is a concise overview that works well on its own or as a supplement to history books and lectures. The Depot was packed with music fans 21 and up on Tuesday, August 31 for The Black Crowes concert. I arrived moments before the Crowes were scheduled to take the stage and found myself in a rather long line. I was relieved to see that though the line was long, it was moving quickly. I had barely made it in line to get my beer before the room erupted in applause and the legendary Black Crowes took the stage. The energy swirling around the Depot was exciting and I soon realize...  Read More

Art of any caliber can start in a coffee shop and it's an exciting process to watch and take part in. Kat Martin, a local artist and painter, said that ''it's so inspiring to work amongst other up and coming artists while creating your own masterpieces with your favorite cup of Joe.'' Some of those up and coming artists in your local coffee shop could be anybody. J.K. When ''Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven'' was released in 2002 it was greeted with praise for its ''Grand Theft Auto'' aesthetics and above-average storyline that plays as a homage to classic mobster films like ''The Godfather'' and ''Goodfellas.'' Eight years later ''Mafia II'' finally arrives.''Mafia II'' differs from its predecessor in that the plot and characters aren't directly lifted from films (although there are moments that are clearly inspired by films like ''The Shawshank Redempt...  Read More

Coffee shops aren't typically known for their friendly baristas, so when the IN staff visited Diva's Cupcakes & Coffee, we were surprised to be warmly greeted as we walked in the door. In certain situations this could have been a bit smothering, but Diva's staff was attentive not annoying. Over the course of their career, the seven-piece Arcade Fire has tackled some pretty weighty concept albums -- death, religion, and now the heaviest of them all ... the suburbs. The record encapsulates all of the hopes, dreams, and fears of the middle class. Win Butler & Co. spin tales of learning to drive (and hoping to drive away), falling in love, and trying to avoid the perils of suburban warfare. Throughout the 15 tracks, there is a constant conflict between the comforts...  Read More

It would be an incredible downer if an album called ''King of the Beach'' wasn't the feel-good record of the summer. No disappointment there -- as long as your idea of party music is trashy garage rock, mixed with trippy, electronic psychedelia. Singer Nathan Williams has no trouble spewing bratty, self-loathing lyrics (''My own friends hate my guts/So what? Who gives a ...'') or kicking out Beach Boys harmonies (''King of the Beach''). Though much of the record cruises at warped s...  Read More

It's not uncommon for an artist to put out a collection of demos. It's a cool way to give fans a sneak peek into the creative process, before the songs receive the heavy dose of studio gloss. Alkaline Trio front man Matt Skiba, however, shakes up the usual timeline with his basement recordings. Rather than release demo versions of previously released Alkaline Trio tunes, Skiba is letting fans hear the skeletons of songs he plans to release on a future solo album. ''Steel Magnolias'' is one of a handful of plays known for its outstanding women's roles. It was a play before it was a film, and on stage, Robert Harling's piece has an all-female cast. It was originally staged Off-Broadway in 1987, and has been performed on Broadway and extensively nationwide since then. Dessert of the Week: Vanilla Bean Cheesecake$3.95, Coffee Garden, 898 E. 900 SouthThe first time I went to Coffee Garden this week, I just drooled over all their delicious-looking desserts. As any practicing or ex-Mormon knows, coffee is on the list of ''thou shalt nots.'' The Word of Wisdom allegedly came as a revelation from God to Joe Smith, but when I found out that he cleaned the floors of tobacco spitters, I wondered if the list was more like a list of ''things I hate.'' Maybe his editor argued that Brussels sprouts should be on that list. Because it was forbidden, I distinctly remember my foray with the dark side. Pasta is a universal favorite and most countries have a variation of it. In China, it's mein; Japan, udon; Poland, pierogi; Germany, spaetzle. The popularity of pasta can be attributed to many factors: it's easy to make, doesn't take up a lot of space, it's easy to cook and it's full of carbohydrates. The ease and versatility of pasta have catapulted it into the culinary mainstream. Most of us are familiar with the Italian side of pasta and it seems a version of Italian pasta ...  Read More

A love of camping is required when you grow up in the country like I did. It's really all there is to do for entertainment. I think I spent more time in the canyon my senior year of high school than I did in class. Back then I was always prepared for last-minute camping trips. I've made it no secret in these pages or for any other outlets I write for of my love of the intersection of comic books and politics. One of my favorite comics that attack it from the front ended last week, and since it will be quite conveniently collected in 10 trade paperbacks, I thought I'd direct you to it. It’s pretty unusual to see a musical about cancer. It’s also probably quite unusual that the author of the musical, Sam Wessels, started writing ''sam i was'' just a week after beginning treatment for leukemia, finished the first act during his third month of chemotherapy, and began the second act eight months later when he reached the end of weekly rounds of high dosage chemo. “sam i was” is the 24-year-old author’s fifth musical.
